An offshoot of the CIT classes, this class offers a series of role-plays for 911 dispatchers to help identify the signs of mental illness over the phone, and to verbally de-escalate crisis situations. The dispatcher learn to ask the questions and gather the information necessary to make the CIT officers intervention on the scene more effective. Introduction to Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) (16 hours POST certified)
This 16 hour POST Certified class supports nation-wide CIT programs by offering an introductory 2-day class perfect for law enforcement personnel. The class, adapted to address the unique situations law enforcement personnel encounter, teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and substance-use disorders and provides response options to de-escalate incidents and refer individuals to appropriate help. Students include officers, supervisors, managers and command staff as well as records clerks, dispatchers, code enforcement and animal control officers, victim advocates and administrative staff. This class familiarizes participants with the observable signs and symptoms pertaining to a selection of mental illnesses most commonly encountered in the detentions setting. The class provides communication skills and strategies to verbally de-escalate and gain compliance from individuals living with mood, thought or personality disorders. This class combines Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety with skill building role-play. The class teaches a 5-step action plan encompassing the skills, resources, and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, and self-help care. The course teaches the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and, most importantly, teaches individuals how to help someone in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.
